Course DescriptionThe aim of this course is to provide students with foundational knowledge of the most important arms control agreements and their implementation procedures with a focus on compliance and verification.

Learning Objectives1. NATO's Approach to Conventional Arms Control (CAC): Given references, students will – by recalling NATO’s approach to CAC and the basic need for global exchange of military information (GEMI) - be able to convert their gained experiences into their daily work as military planners as well as advisors or decision makers. 2. Cornerstone Treaties, Conventions, and Documents: Referencing treaties, conventions and documents, students will identify differences in aim, compliance, and verification between Vienna Document 11 (VD 11), the Treaty on Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE), and the Open Skies Treaty (OS) as the cornerstones of conventional arms control. 3. Supporting Conventions and Initiatives: Given references, students will outline further agreements referring to CAC, namely Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons, Anti-Personnel Mine Convention, Cluster Munitions Convention, Chemical Weapons Convention and Small Arms Light Weapons Initiatives.
