Course DescriptionProvide students with the ability to effectively contribute to the NATO Defence Planning Processes (NDPP), including the derivation of NATO requirements, translation of those requirements into targets, and the assessment of the progress made in fulfilling those targets.

Learning Objectives1. DESCRIBE THE KEY PROCESSES IN NATO DEFENCE PLANNING PROCESS (NDPP): From memory, students will be able to describe the key processes in NATO defence planning in accordance with PO(2009)0042 – Outline Model for NDPP dated 1 April 2009. 2. EXPLAIN THE NDPP PROCESSES AND ASSOCIATED TIMELINE: Given references, students will be able to explain the general timelines, processes, and the inter-relationships of these processes within NDPP in accordance with PO(2009)0042 – Outline Model for NDPP dated 01 April 2009. 3. EXPLAIN HOW NATO REQUIREMENTS ARE ACHIEVED IN THE CAPABILITIY REQUIREMENT REVIEW (CRR) PROCESS: Given references, students will be able to explain, in general terms, how the identification of the overall NATO requirements are achieved as part of the Capability Requirement Review process in accordance with Political Guidance 2015 dated 24 June 2015 PO(2015)0369-REV2 and PO(2009)0042 – Outline Model for NDPP dated 01 April 2009. 4. EXPLAIN THE APPORTIONMENT PROCESS OF NATO REQUIREMENTS: Given references, students will be able to explain the apportionment process of NATO requirements and identify the challenges therein, in accordance with PO(2009)0042 – Outline Model for NDPP dated 01 April 2009. 5. ALLIED DEFENSE PLANNING CAPABILITY SURVEY: Given scenarios, students will interpret national responses to the defence planning capability survey in conjunction with the assessment of nations’ capabilities and contributions to NATO requirements - Defence Planning Capability Survey AC/281-N(2015)006 Final dated 10 March 2015.
